He enlisted in Toronto, Ontario, 10th November, 1914, stating his occupation as a clerk, and his next of kin as his father, G. A. Parkin, of Borrowash, Derbyshire. He had previously served for seven months with the Queen's Own Rifles. He was five feet four inches in height, had a dark complexion, dark brown eyes and black hair, and was a belonged to the Church of England. He had a birthmark on his side under his left arm, and bore an Orange Lodge mark (presumably as a tattoo).
